San Francisco

Apparently many have left their hearts in San Francisco, because it comes in at number five on the top ten U.S. tourist cities. Covering the tip of a 30-mile peninsula in north California and flanked by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, San Francisco is beautiful, scenic, and stately in addition to having a significantly rich and diverse culture.

San Francisco is actually just one of many other major cities in the area, including Oakland, Berkeley, and San Jose. Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and you’ll run into Wine and Marin Country one hour north of the city.

The most popular places in San Fran are neatly sliced by Van Ness Ave, the Embarcadero, and Market Street, with a wealth of culture, arts, shopping, and entertainment in between. Enjoy shopping around Union Square, take a stroll through colorful Chinatown and artsy North Beach, or live up the night in the several nightclubs and late night entertainment spots in South of Market.

Take the kids to Golden Gate Park where nature lovers can wander in the fern dell, the arboretum, the Japanese Tea Garden, and the tulip gardens. And for the ultimate tourist kitsch experience, spend a few hours in Fisherman’s Wharf and visit some of the top tourist attractions in San Francisco: Alcatraz, the Maritime Museum, and the Historic Ships Pier.

The city’s steeply, undulating terrain creates a grid pattern of streets that climb and drop at dramatically steep gradients, making parking and driving quite perilous. It is recommended that you navigate the city by foot or take advantage of San Francisco’s most well-known (and highly convenient) mode of transportation: the cable car (as run by the San Francisco Municipal Railway who also runs several buses, electric trolley lines, and streetcars).

There is also the Bay Area Rapid Transit subway system linking San Francisco with the East Bay. For a more scenic route, and to access many of the bay islands off the coast, try one of the ferries that run out of Fisherman’s Wharf and the Embarcadero Ferry Building.
