SeoulSeoul, the capital city of South Korea is an intriguing mix of old and modern, digitally-wired, and thickly populated with over 10.4 million inhabitants in the city alone, yet interspersed with traditional Korean-styled houses and having one of the lowest pollution levels in Asia thanks to concerted efforts by the government to clean up the air.
One of the best places to shop and live up the night in Seoul is Itaewon, with low prices and fast-paced bargaining the norm. The quality of products sold ranges from kitsch to steals, souvenirs, t-shirts, cheap leather jackets, and shoes like Nike and Reeboks at bargain prices.
To see the truly old part of Seoul, swing around to the Joseon Dynasty Palances that are still standing since the late 14th century. Several teashops and galleries also dot the area. You can see the living royal family in a guided tour of Changdeokgung, especially its beautiful Biwon garden, though many parts of the palace grounds are still off limts.
In a quieter part of Seoul is Namsan Park, marked off by Namsan Mountain. Mt. Namsan used to be marked off with fortifications but now the Seoul Tower has been built at its peak. The tower is 1584 feet tall and houses two restaurants (one of which is revolving), an observation deck, the Aquarium, Ocean Life Museum, Funny World, Game Room, and the Natural Stone Exhibits.. Among the grounds is also the Namsan Botanical Gardens.
