ShanghaiShanghai was once the colonial enclave of China where various European entities carved out cultures of influence and made the city economically and artistically prosperous. Throughout the years, especially in the following decades of communism and the Cultural Revolution, Shanghai glory tarnished somewhat, but the lights could never go out completely. Today Shanghai still maintains its status as one of China’s most commercial, economic cities.
The area of Shanghai that had formerly been Frenchtown is still a thriving shopping district with huge department stores and streets littered with cafes, boutiques, and antique shops. Heading down the streets off Yan’an Lu, you’ll come across evocative architecture and nearby, the Yuyuan Gardens and Bazaar area offer a delicious variety of cuisine and appealing visuals.
There’s much shopping to be had in Nanjing Lu, once China’s golden mile, though that title’s faded a bit to the more modern Huaihai Lu district. Still, if anything, Nanjing Lu still has its history and reputation and remains very much commercialized with such companies like Esprit and Benetton.
The Bund, an Anglo-Indian term, is Shanghai’s version of Wall Street, with feverish trading by Western businessmen. It’s the city’s most Westernized mile with a strip of hotels, shopping areas, and nightclubs.
