South AfricaSince the end of apartheid over a decade ago, South Africa has begun to assert its identity as a tourist destination. There’s plenty to see in this country, from the big cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg to the beaches on the eastern coast to the national parks full of African wildlife.
Cape Town is a city known for its hospitality. Table Mountain provides a stunning backdrop; taking a cable car up it will provide a stunning view of the city itself. The Cape of Good Hope has a nature reserve, where you can see some spectacular scenery and catch glimpses of rare wildlife. Within the city itself, the Castle of Good Hope is a walled castle that’s been converted to a museum; the William Feur Collection, featuring some great Dutch furniture, is worth checking out.
Though some racial and political turmoil still linger in Johannesburg, it’s a city worth visiting. The Arts Alive Festival, which spans September and October, celebrates the boom in Jo-burg’s arts communities since South Africa’s liberation. The Apartheid Museum is an essential stop for anyone who wants to get a grasp of what life here used to be like. For a less emotional attraction, visit the Johannesburg Planetarium and surrounding natural history collections.
On South Africa’s northeastern border lies world-famous Kruger National Park, one of the top wildlife preserves in the world. This is your chance to see African animals such as lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, and rhinos—among others—in their natural habitats.
