South Carolina

South Carolina is situated at the gateway to the Deep South along the United States’ Atlantic coast, and while it tends to get overshadowed by its northern sister, South Carolina is a mean contender on its own. Featuring a huge array of beaches, golf courses, and idyllic town landscapes, South Carolina is a surprising wealth of beauty and entertainment that should not be missed.

The state’s biggest gem is its 60-plus miles of gleaming shoreline stretching from Little River to Georgetown. This coastline is known as the Grand Stand, and it draws a significant portion of visitors to its tourist-catered shores. Myrtle Beach is a city of multiple attractions, from several golf courses and sunny beaches to the Pavilion Amusement Park and Butterfly Park.

Get into the wetland areas of the Grand Stand with places like Alligator Adventure and Ripley’s Aquarium where you can discover the state’s population of sea turtles and alligators in their natural habitats.

Thirty minutes away from Myrtle Beach is Pawleys Island, luring visitors with its white sand beaches, shellfish-filled creeks, and unbroken vistas of tidal march. In the local town, discover the quaint historic district of period homes and plantation life.

While it’s tempting to lounge on South Carolina’s beaches, daytrips to its beautiful towns are well worth a visit. Places like Abbeville, Beaufort, Georgetown, and Pendleton offer you small town friendliness with beautiful buildings and houses that are protected by the National Register of Historic Places. Of course, these towns are far from being out-of-fashion, as many offer great choices if food, shopping, and entertainment.
