South KoreaDestinations in South Korea
Despite a tumultuous century as the battleground for some of the worst wars the world has seen, a somewhat threatening northern neighbor, and several economic setbacks in the 1990’s, South Korea has emerged onto the international scene as a highly developed, industrialized country with a paradoxical affinity for nature, branding its own unique Asian identity on the world.
South Korea’s biggest tourist draw is its capital city of Seoul. Over 10.4 million people live in the metropolitan area alone, making it the most populated single city in the world. It’s also considered one of the world’s most “digitally-wired” cities in this increasingly globally connected economy.
The city itself is an odd mixture of old and new, neon lights, squeaky clean department stores, and towering skyscrapers rubbing up against traditional Korean houses, inns, old city gates, active street markets, and royal palaces. It’s both an amazingly modern city with all the creature comforts of home and yet still maintains a strong hold on its heritage.
Outside of Seoul, the attractions run more towards the historic, cultural, and natural rather than the hip and urban. The ancient city of Gyeongju is littered with ancient temples, royal tombs, ruins, and structures of old Silla culture dating back to the 10th century.
Seoraksan National Park contains some of South Korea’s most spectacular and stunning scenery, from high, rocky peaks, thick forests, and majestic waterfalls to boulder-strewn rivers, beaches, and ancient temples. The park offers several areas for camping, paths for hiking, and even the Osaek Hot Spring Resort for pure luxury.
