US Virgin IslandsComing into the hands of the United States in 1917 to prevent Germany from gaining a foothold in the Western hemisphere if Denmark was invaded, the U.S. Virgin Islands have been a dependent territory of America ever since. With some of the best white sand beaches in the world, especially in Magens Bay, the islands have become a tourist playground for those looking for some fun in the sun.
The region consists of three main islands, St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, with the smaller and uninhabited Buck Island lying off St. Croix’s northeastern shore. Buck Island features a beautiful beach with elkhorn coral. Some great snorkeling can be had here, introducing you to the abundant marine life living in these waters.
On St. Thomas, Coki Bay receives plenty of visitors each year for its picturesque, popular beaches, consistently good weather, and fish so friendly that they often will eat from your hand. Nearby is Coral World, an 80,000 gallon aquarium that lets you explore the assortment of marine life without having to get wet. If you’re looking for a more urban, lively time, the island is rife with hopping nightlife in its commercial and rambunctious towns.
St. Croix, the Virgin Islands’ largest island, is far less commercial than St. Thomas and just the place to get a feel for the local culture there. The island is freshly forested, with sloping hills and fertile lowlands, all surrounded by coral reefs. Fascinating remnants of sugar plantations dot the landscape, evidence of St. Croix’s once great industry and commercial height.
Half bought-up by American Laurence Rockefeller and developed into a secluded resort and campground, St. John is the quietest of the Virgin Islands. Today, two-thirds of it is preserved by the Virgin Islands National Park and features excellent hiking trails through the tropical rainforests, swimming, horseback riding, scuba diving, and snorkeling. However, even this smaller island is not without its lovely beaches, including Caneel Bay, Hawks Nest Bay, Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay.
