Venice

Venice is a marvel to behold, overrun with a grid work of 150 canals, crumbling palazzos, narrow streets, and 409 bridges. The city is actually built across 117 small islands.

It’s a deceptively small area, but complicated with a confusing pattern of streets, buildings, and, of course, the famous canals. It’s one of the largest car-free zones in Europe, where transportation occurs mainly by boat or foot.

Within they city’s lazy, tarnished mansions lies several famous works of art by the masters. The Ca’d’Orco is home to the Galleria Franchetti, a collection of bronzes, paintings, and tapestries from the 14th and 16th centuries, many of which are by Titian, Tintoretto, Mantegna, and Giorgione. Along the upper balconies lies a panoramic view of the city and its waterways.

The Gallerie dell’Accademia contains Venice’s most important art collection, including pieces by Paolo Veneziano, Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Lorenzo Lotto, and Tintoretto.

One of the most well-known attractions in Venice is the Doge’s Palace, architecturally Venetian Gothic and the home of the doge and his government along with his prisons. Inside, the rooms are grandiose and opulent, housing several works of art and designs by famous artists.

Shop for fresh fruit, vegetables, and fish at the Ponte di Rialto, where the first bridge over the Grand Canal was built. Tourist stalls litter the bridge, so it’s an ideal place to pick up your souvenirs here. Walk on over to St. Mark’s Square for the lively heart of the city filled with café orchestras, pigeons, and diners.
