West Virginia

The wild backwoods of the United States are encompassed by the state of West Virginia, the only state in the nation that was formed out of the American Civil War. It’s known for its significant mining history and undeveloped, mountainous lands. With such rugged, untamed terrain, West Virginia is your one-stop destination for all the fun and challenging outdoor activities you can handle.

West Virginia boasts the nation’s best white water rafting with nearly 2,000 miles of mountain streams through the state’s back country. The landscape is incomparable as visitors can paddle through abandoned coal mining towns, scenic waterfalls, and steep canyons. The whitewater rapids are classified according to their difficulty, from I to VI, but don’t worry if you’re a novice as there are many guides who help beginners navigate these rough waters.

Over one such river, the ironically named New River, is the New River Gorge Bridge, a steel-arch bridge spanning 3030 feet 876 feet over the river. On the third Saturday of October, Bridge Day, the bridge is opened to pedestrian traffic and festivities are held that include amazing feats of rappelling, bungee jumping, BASE jumping, and parachuting.

The more sedentary visitor can take advantage of the significant number of golf courses that stretch across West Virginia’s land. In fact, the first golf club of America was organized in West Virginia, Oakhurst Links in White Sulphur Springs. Of course, there are other several modern resorts and golf courses dotting the West Virginian mountains, offering guests great golfing and beautiful views.
